Signs a Site Needs a Redesign, Not Just a Refresh

Not every site needs to be rebuilt. Before quoting a redesign we look for the problems a new coat of paint will not fix:

  • People land and leave. High bounce with decent traffic usually means the page answers a different question than the one that brought them.
  • The phone does not ring. If the number, the form and the service area are not visible in the first screen on a phone, the site is losing calls it already paid for.
  • The platform fights you. When a simple text edit needs a developer, content stops happening and the site ages fast.
  • It is slow on mobile data, not just on your office wifi.
  • The structure grew by accident. Pages added one at a time, with no hierarchy, compete with each other in search.

What a Redesign Includes

  • Structure and navigation. One page per thing you sell, in an order a buyer follows, so both people and search engines know what the site is about.
  • Design and content. Layouts built mobile first, with the offer, the proof and the next step on every page.
  • Speed. Compressed images, fewer scripts and a template that does not load what it does not use. See on-site SEO for the technical side.
  • Conversion. Short forms, a visible phone number and landing pages for the campaigns that need them.
  • Measurement. Tracking set up before launch, so calls, forms and bookings are counted from day one. That is part of our analytics and reporting.

Keeping the Rankings You Already Have

This is where most redesigns lose money. A new site changes URLs, and if the old ones are not mapped to the new ones, the traffic those pages earned disappears the day you launch. It is common to see a site lose half its search traffic after a redesign and never recover it.

Before launch we inventory every URL that has traffic or links, map each one to its new address, and set the redirects. After launch we watch coverage and rankings for the pages that mattered, so a drop gets caught in days and not at the end of the quarter.

How Long It Takes and What Drives the Cost

  • Number of pages. A five page site and a fifty page site are different projects, and most of the work is content, not design.
  • How much content already exists. Writing new copy takes longer than moving copy that is already good.
  • Functionality. Booking, ecommerce, memberships and integrations each add time.
  • Platform. Rebuilding on your current platform is faster than migrating, but a migration is sometimes the reason for the project.

If the site is fine and the problem is a specific campaign, a new landing page is faster and cheaper than a full redesign. We will say so.

Website Redesign FAQ

Will a redesign hurt our Google rankings?

Only if the URLs are not mapped and redirected. Handled properly, rankings hold and usually improve, because speed and structure get better at the same time.

Can you redesign the site we already have instead of starting over?

Often yes. If the platform is workable and the content is decent, an optimization pass costs less and ships faster than a rebuild.

Do we need new content?

Usually some. The pages that rank keep their content, with edits. The pages that never ranked are where new writing pays for itself.

What do you need from us to start?

Access to the site and the domain, whatever analytics exist, and an hour to walk us through how you actually sell.
